Today’s Assignment

Students will learn about polyatomic ions in this lesson including what they are, how to name them, and predicting chemical formulas. Students will be surprised to find that polyatomic ions are in many of their everyday products such as food and hygiene.
The Next Generation Science Standard covered is HS-PS1-1: “Use the periodic table as a model to predict the relative properties of elements based on the patterns of electrons in the outermost energy level of atoms.”
The lesson should take up to an hour, but actual time needed will be based on the student’s reading ability.

1. Students are to read the section titled, “Lesson 22 Isn’t it Ionic? Polyatomic Ions” found on pages 109 – 111. It is encouraged to look at all text, figures, and examples for maximum comprehension.

2. Students are to complete all work either on paper or on a Google Document submitted in the assignment found on Google Classroom. Students are to copy the tables found on pages 109 and 110 (on the left side of both pages). Students must also copy down the “Important to Know” box of text found on the left side of page 110.

3. Students are to complete the lesson exercises. Full sentences are required for answers to the “Reading Questions” (1 & 2) and number 7 of the “Reason and Apply” questions. All other questions do not require full sentences, but please be sure they are answered.
