Today’s Assignment
The American Revolution is over and Congress created a weak document called the Articles of Confederation that provided for only one branch of government – Legislative/Congress. This plan of government for the new United States of America only gave Congress a few important powers: declare war, raise an army/navy, print money and set up a postal system. The major issue not addressed is the ability to tax. This caused many disputes between the new states and eventually “Shay’s Rebellion” which caused Congress to call for the Constitutional Convention. Each state was invited to send delegates to Philadelphia in May 1787 for the purpose of revising the Articles of Confederation.
Your task is to be a newspaper reporter and report on the event of September 17, 1787 when the new United States Constitution is signed. Please CLICK on the attachments below to help you organize your notes for reporting on the event as you read the video transcript and/or watch the video clip posted on your Google Classroom. You will answer the questions: What, Where, When, Who, and Why as well as interview 3 delegates. You have a copy of the Reporter Notes handout ready in your Google Drive to complete and then submit in Google Classroom OR you can Print the handout OR you can write your notes on Notebook Paper. This assignment will take approximately 20 minutes to complete (5 to 10 minutes to read transcript/view video and 10 to 15 minutes to answer reporter guide questions).
The Constitutional Convention Reporters Notes Guide handout and Video Transcript titled, “The Making of the American Constitution” handout are attached below to this website. You may access all handouts and needed information for this assignment on your Google Classroom for U.S. History as well as the Ted-Ed Video clip if you are able to watch a video on your home device. When logging on to Google Classroom, students use their school email and password.
