11th Grade – Chemistry – Jonathan Stephens

Today’s Assignment

Students will learn about compounds made from transition metal ions in this lesson including what they are, how to name them, and how to determine charges. Students will be surprised to find that transition metal chemistry has a big role in pigments for paints and gem stones.
The Next Generation Science Standard covered is HS-PS1-1: “Use the periodic table as a model to predict the relative properties of elements based on the patterns of electrons in the outermost energy level of atoms.”

The lesson should take up to an hour, but actual time needed will be based on the student’s reading ability.

1. Students are to read the section titled, “Lesson 23 Alchemy of Paint: Transition Metal Chemistry” found on pages 112 – 115. It is encouraged to look at all text, figures, and examples for maximum comprehension.

2. Students are to complete all work either on paper or on a Google Document submitted in the assignment found on Google Classroom. Students are to write a 2 – 3 sentence summary for each section in green. The first is titled “Transition Metal Compounds” and the second is titled “Charges on Transition Metal Cations”. Alternatively, students may copy down the entire “Lesson Summary” found on page 114.

3. Students are to copy the “Important to Know” box of information on the bottom, left-hand side of page 113. They should also copy down the examples for iron (III) oxide and iron (II) oxide on the bottom of page 113. These have the red and blue arrows. Please copy down the text in italics found beneath each example as well.

4. Students are to complete the lesson exercises. Full sentences are required for answers to the “Reading Questions” (1 & 2). All other questions do not require full sentences, but please be sure they are answered.
