Today’s Assignment
Students will learn about and practice naming covalent compounds. This is useful as people often interact with chemicals and knowing how to name them or how to interpret formulas might one day be essential.
The Next Generation Science Standards covered are HS-PS1-1: “Use the periodic table as a model to predict the relative properties of elements based on the patterns of electrons in the outermost energy level of atoms.” HS-PS1-2: “Construct and revise an explanation for the outcome of a simple chemical reaction based on the outermost electron states of atoms, trends in the periodic table, and knowledge of the patterns of chemical properties.” and HS-PS1-3 “Plan and conduct an investigation to gather evidence to compare the structure of substances at the bulk scale to infer the strength of electrical forces between particles.”
The lesson should take up to an hour, but this depends on student reading ability and pace of work.
Students will watch the video and complete pages 4 – 6 of the attached packet called “Naming Molecular Compounds”. This was given out on Friday, March 13. If the student does not have the packet, it can be printed and completed or the student can write out the answers on a sheet of paper. For any work done on paper, it is asked that pictures be taken and these be submitted to the Google Classroom assignment. If that doesn’t work or is too difficult, they can be emailed to Mr. Stephens at jonathan.stephens@knox.kyschools.us. Students might be able to submit the paper version to the bus driver on Friday, March 20. Lastly, students can complete the activity using PDF-editing software (like Kami) in the Google Classroom assignment.
