Today’s Assignment

Write a narrative (a story) of at least 250 words that includes the following sentence: “It was a life-or-death moment.” You might choose to make this narrative dramatic (a car accident, for example) or funny (my uncle, for instance, showed up to my 13th birthday party in a hockey mask with a chainsaw because he thought that would be funny, which it is in hindsight but was not so much at the time) or quietly important (remember dropping your lunch tray in middle school?–that certainly feels like a life-or-death moment even though it isn’t likely to literally kill you). Throughout this unit we have seen many different ways of portraying “life-or-death” moments, from the cool and matter-of-fact (the dog smelled death on him and simply walked away) to the shockingly dramatic (wait, is the husband still alive?!). They can take place externally while the inner life continues (as in “Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge”) or internally while the outer life continues (as in “A Wagner Matinee”) They can be factual and autobiographical like Frederick Douglass’s narrative or purely fiction like many we have read. I will leave the choice of fiction or non-fiction and first person or third up to you. The very best narratives will make a larger point, however subtle, but it is sufficient simply to spin a good yarn, one with a beginning, a middle, and an end. Also, 250 words is a minimum, so feel free to get carried away (but if you go over 1000 words, you’d better make it good). I fully expected to be impressed, thrilled, and delighted. Write on, my peeps.
