11th Grade – Chemistry – Jonathan Stephens

Today’s Assignment

Students will learn about how atoms are bonded together and some of the noticeable differences in properties between the types of bonding. Particulate representations are presented throughout the reading, which are very helpful for grasping this subject.
The Next Generation Science Standards covered are HS-PS1-1: “Use the periodic table as a model to predict the relative properties of elements based on the patterns of electrons in the outermost energy level of atoms.” HS-PS1-2: “Construct and revise an explanation for the outcome of a simple chemical reaction based on the outermost electron states of atoms, trends in the periodic table, and knowledge of the patterns of chemical properties.” and HS-PS1-3 “Plan and conduct an investigation to gather evidence to compare the structure of substances at the bulk scale to infer the strength of electrical forces between particles.”

The lesson should take up to an hour, but actual time needed will be based on the student’s reading ability.

1. Students are to read the section titled, “Lesson 26 Electron Glue: Bonding” found on pages 129 to 133. It is encouraged to look at all text, figures, and examples for maximum comprehension.

2. Students are to complete all work either on paper or on a Google Document submitted in the assignment found on Google Classroom. Students are to define all vocabulary found at the top left of page 133.

3. Students are to copy the Four Models of Bonding found on page 130. This includes all text and images inside the boxes.

3. Students are to complete the lesson exercises. Full sentences are required for answers to the “Reading Questions” (1 & 2) and “Reason and Apply” (5, 7, 8, 9, and 10). All other questions in “Reason and Apply” (3, 4, and 6) do not require full sentences, but please be sure they are answered.
